Congratulations! You’ve made the excellent decision to invest in solar power for your home. You’ve chosen your system, and now the most exciting day is just around the corner: installation day.
For many homeowners, this part of the journey can feel like a bit of an unknown. What actually happens? How long will it take? Do I need to do anything?
At Limitless Solar Solutions, we believe in a transparent and stress-free experience. This guide will walk you through our entire professional solar installation process, from the final checks to the moment you start generating your own clean energy. Here’s exactly what you can expect.
Before Installation Day: Setting the Stage for Success
A smooth installation day is the result of careful planning. In the weeks leading up to your scheduled date, our team will be handling a few key things behind the scenes.
- Final Design & Site Check: We confirm the final panel layout and inverter location based on our technical site assessment, ensuring optimal performance and aesthetic appeal.
- Grid Connection Approval: We submit all the necessary applications and technical documentation to your electricity network provider (like Energex or Ergon) to get formal approval to connect your solar system to the grid.
- Scheduling Your Installation: Once we have approval, we’ll contact you to book a firm installation date that works for you. We’ll also confirm all the details and answer any last-minute questions you might have.
On the Day: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Most standard residential solar installations are completed in just one day. Our Clean Energy Council (SAA (Solar Accreditation Australia)) accredited team follows a proven, efficient process to get the job done safely and to the highest standard.
Step 1: Team Arrival & Site Preparation (Around 7:30 AM)
Our fully-identified team will arrive, introduce themselves, and walk you through the plan for the day. They will establish a safe work area, set up their ladders and safety equipment, and take care to protect any surrounding property.
Step 2: On the Roof – Racking & Panel Installation
This is where the visible transformation happens. The team will first install a specialised mounting system, known as racking. These rails are securely attached to your roof trusses, forming a rock-solid foundation for your panels. Once the racking is in place, the solar panels are carefully mounted and secured.
Step 3: The Electrical Work – Inverter & Wiring
While part of the team is on the roof, our lead electrician will be handling the electrical components. This involves:
- Mounting the solar inverter in the agreed-upon location (usually in the garage or on a shaded exterior wall).
- Running the electrical conduit from the roof down to the inverter.
- Installing any necessary DC and AC isolators.
- Making the required connections in your home’s main switchboard.
Please note: For safety, we will need to shut off your home’s mains power for a short period during this stage. Our electrician will give you plenty of notice before this happens.
Step 4: System Testing & Initial Checks
Once everything is connected, the team will perform initial tests to ensure all components are working correctly and the system is generating power as expected. They will then clean up the work area thoroughly, leaving your property as tidy as they found it.
After the Installers Leave: The Final Steps to Going Live
Once our team drives away, there are just a couple of final, crucial steps before you can officially start saving.
- Electrical Inspection: A licensed electrical inspector will visit your property to sign off on the installation, ensuring it meets all Australian Standards and safety regulations.
- Your New Solar Meter Installation: Your electricity retailer will arrange for your existing meter to be replaced with a bi-directional “smart meter.” This new meter can measure both the power you draw from the grid and the excess solar energy you send back. This can sometimes take a few weeks, depending on the retailer’s schedule.
- System Commissioning & Handover: Once the new meter is installed, it’s time to flip the switch! We will provide you with a full handover, showing you how to turn your system on, how to read your inverter, and how to set up any monitoring apps so you can track your energy production.
